Red diesel in a White Winter
Your HRMC tax obligations are probably the last thing on your mind when helping others at this time of year. However, HRMC have issued a general reminder that red diesel must not be used on public roads.
They have though recognised that farmers and other rural business people are vital in keeping the roads clear in winter.
Consequently, if the weather worsens and the UK experiences a prolonged period of severe snow and ice, then HMRC will announce an “amnesty” on red diesel use for clearing or gritting roads to provide access to schools, hospitals or remote communities.
We will report further on our website if this happens, but in the meantime please do not use red diesel on public roads.
Also please don’t forget to:
• Ensure your vehicle and machinery fulfills all legal and safety requirements before helping out
• Check your insurance before helping with snow clearing
