Further tax discrepancies identified by new H M Revenue & Customs computer system.
Following the announcement, in September 2010, that H M Revenue & Customs had identified almost six million tax payers who had either over or under paid tax in previous years, a second announcement has been reported in the press today. H M Revenue and Customs have said that a further six million people are set to receive tax rebates averaging £400 while a further one million will be informed that they have underpaid their tax by about £600.
Letters will begin to go out in the next few months. Those owing tax will be able to pay in stages via an adjustment to their PAYE code. Overpayments are due to be settled by December 2012 and interest will be paid on all overpaid tax.
