From April 2010 the sick note is being replaced by a “Statement of Fitness to Work” or "Fit Note". Doctors will be able to advise if a patient is either “not fit for work” or “may be fit for work.”
The doctor may give you and your employee advice about any adaptations or adjustments you could consider to help your employee although it is not compulsory to act on the doctor's advice. However, it may help your employee to avoid unnecessary sickness absence.
If it is not possible to make the necessary adjustments you should – for sick pay purposes – treat the statement as if the doctor has said that your employee is not fit for work. Your obligations to pay statutory sick pay will not change.
