Good news for West Cumbria economy?
On the day that the government announced its plans for nuclear energy in the future, it was announced that a majority of Cumbrians – and over two thirds of West Cumbrians – were in favour of looking at the possibility of a high level nuclear depositary in the county.
“There are many arguments for and against the plan,” says robinson+co’s Energy Coast Partner Peter Ellwood, “but this announcement, together with the government’s announcement, can only be good news.” And he points out that with no “plan B” in place, the government is going to be keen to compromise with the Cumbrian councils and other interested parties.
robinson+co act for a lot of businesses associated with the nuclear and decommissioning industries, industries in which West Cumbria leads the world. “Even if the repository does not finally go ahead,” continues Peter, “the research to be undertaken over the next years will ensure a boost to the local economy with an influx of geologists and other scientists.”
